Legends Race at Bellewstown on Thursday 18th August
Legends Race for Arkle at Bellewstown on Thursday 18th August 2011 In the early ‘50's successive runnings of the DROGHEDA TRADESMANS CHASE were won at Bellewstown Racecourse by •· Bright Cherry •· Nas na Riogh who were the respective dams of ARKLE and his great rival MILL HOUSE, both incidentally ridden by Pat Taaffe. The Arkle Memorial Fund has been established to erect a permanent bronze monument to the great ‘ARKLE' in Ashbourne, Co. Meath. Jim Corcoran, Chairman of Bellewstown Racecourse and Jim Dreaper, Chairman of the Arkle Memorial Fund are delighted to announce the running of the ‘ARKLE - ‘Legends Riding for a Legend Race' to raise much needed funds to assist with the project. This additional race will feature in the programme at Bellewstown Races on Thursday 18th August (E) 2011, when Jockey Legends of the past will compete against each other over 1m 6f on the flat. This truly unique event will celebrate the achievements of Arkle and Pat Taaffe, with the top jockeys of the past all raising funds through individual sponsorship to contribute to the cause. Jim Corcoran of Bellewstown Racecourse said ‘We are delighted to host this race at Bellewstown Racecourse and wish to thank HRI and the Stewards of the Turf Club for making this possible. It will be a wonderfully poignant, nostalgic and memorable occasion.' Jim Dreaper son of Arkle's trainer Tom is equally delighted, ‘We are really looking forward to seeing all the legends of race riding competing in this race, and know it will catch the imagination of the racing public, who have been so supportive of our fundraising to date.' Jim himself was of course a leading amateur and will compete in the race, subject to medical approval. Jim continued ‘We are calling on all the top jockeys of yesteryear to contact me, and come out to raise much needed funds for this everlasting and fitting tribute to the great ‘ARKLE'! It will be a fantastically nostalgic day and I am delighted Bellewstown are so committed to making this a memorable event.' Our celebrity judges will be on the lookout for Ireland's stylish ladies and we have some great prizes for everyone who takes part. We hope to see you there!"
